VIRUS WARNING
« on: July 14, 2004, 01:26:34 pm »
Got this email the other day.

You will  notice it is from Club Arnage or a hacker. McAfee picked it up as a virus.

DO NOT OPEN IT.

Thats quite a common one - the zip file contains malicious files - just delete the email and it should be harmless.

Just remember never to open .exe, .zip, double extension file names (ie  .xip.scr) and some .jpg files from people you dont know - ie, who you dont know by name and you shuold be OK.

I am at work so the company system noticed it. Problem is that we are not allowed to read our own mail or use the internet for non work purposes so I might be dissapearing from the forum soon.

Looks like I will have all internet access blocked.

The Virus did not affect my machine but the virus software is soo good it detected it before it opened but notified IT.

I have a 64Bit AMD Athlon 3200. It is not permenantely connect to the web but if I get banned at work then I might have to invest in a WiFi Network and Broadband. I mainly use my home PC for picture and video editing. You know when you have that great picture of a TVR and a lampost!!

you don't need wifi

just go to bt web site put in your post code and it wil tell you if you're broadband enabled.

Wifi is for mobile users (lap tops/pda's) with cards or centrino crap.

I use it out and about and it aint briliant you mainly find it in pubs and you feel a right berk going in to dive joint getting out the lap top to check you're emails or send your notes back
and i was rummaging around in the loft, when i found an original copy of the bible.....which was nice

The reason I would go for WiFi is that it will save me routing the cable round the walls throught the floors to get to the phone socket. At the moment I use a retractable cable reel and put it away when I have finished online.

If I get Broadband then I will want a permenant connection that is not a trip hazard.

WiFi and Wireless are a tad different.

What you want is a wireless router - Netgear, US Robotics and D-Link are all pretty good - most come with an inbuilt Firewall, and some come with security to stop your next door neighbour hacking you and stealing your bandwidth.

If you want a cheapish, but GOOD broadband connection I can help you - you know my details, just gimme a buzz.
Broadband is all about contention ratios - 50:1 = Standard - 20:1 = Business spec and good home standard.

If you live in a big house with thick walls, a repeater might be required, and these can be about £70 so mioght be worth borrowing one to check what you need first.

You then need a card for your laptop or desktop and you probably want 54mbps speed on it for the future more than anything (you wont be downloading at 54mbps)

If you want a quote or something gimme a buzz.

Brad

im 'sharing' my next door neighbors broadband connection thro a wireless network, n it works fine 99% of the time - only problem ive got is that im on the edge of the range so it can be a bit dodgy sometimes
