HELP! BREAKDOWN COVER
« on: June 08, 2007, 04:36:35 pm »
Guys and girls,

The AA have just declined to cover my '79 vw camper because it has had an exchange engine and we don't have the original certificate of registration for the exchange engine (?). Any one got any recommendations for european breakdown cover for classics (dare I call it a classic!)?

All suggestions gratefully received! Thanks

Try http://www.drive24-7.co.uk Not sure of the age limits, but they offer good value on cars, trailers, caravans etc. so may help ??? Alternately, I've also found Norwich Union Breakdown to be very helpful (if you can get past the outsourced call center)

you could try a company called international breakdown, i think they just charged you a bit more for a car over 10 years

Sure other members will help on the immediate problem, but come insurance renewal time get a quote from Footman James. Their classic camper policy cost me £110pa fully comp and it includes free European Breakdown cover.

Maybe don't bother this year, surely the Dub won't let you down?  ;)
I wouldn't sit there if I were you, it's still a bit wet.

thanks as well I must sort out mine

Bit in the paper the other day, recommended

Quotelinedirect.co.uk - up to 20 year old
and
Vehicle-rescue.com - up to 10 years, older ones pay extra

Talking about year coverage and 90  euro cover from £59 per year.

Not tried iether yet, going to sort it out this afternoon

Good luck

Let us know how you get on and i'l post my results ( 4 year old PT - if it gets an MOT, failed this morning)

just checked with my car insurance company,

oh joy, part of the policy covers Euro breakdown.

Saves me money - more to spend on Beer, when I'm off my tablets.

So it may be worth checking with your insurance comp, if they offer this as standard or as an extra

My MGA is insured through Norton Classic, which for about £110 includes European breakdown cover.  Not sure who you're insured with, but I would have thought any of the main classic insurers like Norton or Footman James who include cover would be happy to take on a 79 VW camper.

because it has had an exchange engine
How did the AA know

Just about the first question was 'is it the original engine?'. I thought it being a recon unit from a well known vw specialist would help but all its done is open up a whole can of worms about the origin of the exchange unit. Nothings ever simple is it!
Anyhow, thanks for the leads, off to surf the net for a deal!
