They are just not strong enough to handle that kind of wind - like the many gazebos that were twisted and flattened. Trouble is, it's a compromise between strength, portability and weight.
Rick lost one as well - in more ways than one. First it snapped, then after repairs it was nicked, together with the Canadian Goose

Flag Poles:
OK, if erected correctly, steel/iron 1" dia piping could be raised to 120ft with stays (my Dad's a retired antenna specialist). Optimum would be 50-60ft with stays midway and top or at 1/3rds. Anchorages could be same location. But downside is spacing of the anchors and transportation.
What will be needed is a pulley at the top for hoisting flags. (It would take at least 1hr to lower and re-erect- has to be don in stages).
This year we used a supplied 'park bench' and lashed it with cable ties and some nylon rope to the concrete framework. But it looked good.
