The Club Arnage editorial team were chatting over a few beers recently and forming our strategy for the 2006 vingt quatre heures. One of the things that came up was a way to involve CA forum peeps in what we do for the ACO.
You probably know that CA provides the English editorial for the ACO's own site 'www.lemans.org' and has done for the last four years. We are annually imprisoned in the press room for the duration of the race without access to the normal comforts of the regular race fan. We have a TV feed, a timing screen and a window to peer out of but depite all that, it's often hard to work out what happened when a car just fails to come around and doesn't appear on any of our screens.
This is where you guys come in. If an incident happens right in front of you, you almost certainly have a much better idea then we do of what transpired. All we need to do is give you a method of telling us.
What is proposed is a text-to-email gateway were you can text us your observations to a mobile number and we get that on our screens like a news ticker. You can text us anything interesting or worth a comment or two. We can also get pics from your phone if you like. We might even set up two feeds, one for serious on-track incidents and one for jolly chit chat.
If you think its a worthwhile idea we can make it happen.

Sounds like a good idea.
Most people carry their mobiles now.
I'm game

I was just looking through the Radio Le mans site to see if they had a similar facility, then I found this thread!
I think its a great idea! The number of times over the years you see a car crawl passed with a puncture or smoke pouring out and no one knows for 5 minutes!

Excellent idea.
Can't promise any input as I always seem to be in the wrong place when something dramatic happens, but with enough people willing to contribute, it should work out well.
What about information sent out from you guys - do you have (or could you have) a link-up with Radio LM so that we could get the info as well??

sounds fair to do our bit 8),
let us know how!!
-
I'm planning to link-up with RLM too, so they should benefit from the
same info.
Excellent idea.

Sounds like a good idea.
I guess we could text in details to a central number? You do run the risk of getting swamped with messages at certain times.
-
Dave, I regularly trawl the length of the track during the race and always make at least one visit to Arnage and Mulsanne corners.
Sounds a great idea.
-
If we do the text-to-email thing, we will be able to cope with a fairly high level of traffic. (we hope)

We're probably trackside for at least half of the race, and foray out to Mulsanne corner, Indianapolis etc as well as the main drag from the Porsche curves through to Tetre Rouge. Just let us know what the number is in due course.........

A very good idea. I will be happy to join in too.
Oh yes, nice new front page picture. :)
-
Seems an excellent idea to me, as long as people don't start overwhelming you with pointless messages.
-
What pointless messages. Can you get us requests played on Radio Le Mans?
This seems an excellent idea, as news takes ages to get through to Radio Le Mans, who must be getting it from the ACO. Lets use the resource and the techology.

Oh yes, nice new front page picture. :)
But the GT40 replica link made a loud bang and smoke poured out of my monitor. A really good reason to go for a wiki. :-)

Brilliant idea, having comitted spotters........... when sober ,to let you know what is going on.........not only that I guess that with a link to RLM .........CA might just get a few plugs during the event!!!!!!

excellent idea, would it be worth having a code? rather than having to write the message in long hand!!!
something along the lines of car #, arnage corner, flat tyre, retired. you can always contact the observer for more info if needed.
it may be worth looking at the brief descriptions the ACO use in their race results for suggestions.
-
Count me in buddy, good idea if I ever find a spot where I can see the track thro the fence/over the top of fans heads!!!!!!! ;D
-
Great Idea count me in
-
Great Idea, will most certainly be happy to help. But as already said I always seem to be in the wrong places.
-
Great,
We can keep RLM informed of Beer mountain heights, accidents, illegal use of mastic etc.
-
...and the height of the water table at the Golden Triangle... :o

...and the height of the water table at the Golden Triangle... :o
Water??? I woudn't exactly describe the last overflow as water!!

Sounds great, the only issue could be the potential for gobbledy gook after 11.00 pm and the effects of the Poo bar :-\
-
I wasn't going to mention this as it would take about 30 minutes for me to do a text message, and chances are it wouldn't make sense even when I was sober. Mind you I'mm doing quite well at the minute but its only 10:30
We have to embrace the technology, now if only I didn't have to wait for the valves to warm up on my mobile phone. KT88s rule

I now if only I didn't have to wait for the valves to warm up on my mobile phone. KT88s rule
Now that bings back a few memories if only I could remember what a KT88 did. I remember as a kid I would go off to sleep hearing my Farther talking to some Stateside Ham telling him his Rig was homebrew with a pair of 6V6s in the final.

A KT88 is a 6v6 on steroids. Its the size of a jam jar
Sorry to go off thread a bit, but if you understand how these thing work, the rest is simple. I know how mobile phones work, its pressing the buttons and finding its taken a picture that confuses me
-
Good idea Dave
I get around the track a few times day and night, as mentioned before i am also a slow texter.
Just hook me up with the info to help out.
-
KT88's make damn fine power amplifiers, that's a TUBE or VALVE, 35watts of unadulterated pleasure.
-
Good idea.
I'd be happy to inform of any incidents if I see them.
When the number is announced I'll pass it around the rest of the group I am going with.
-
Count me in as well, this is a great idea, should be fun to read back the stuff at a later stage.
-
...and the height of the water table at the Golden Triangle... :o
...always monitoring that Smokester ;)
-
Unable to assist this year, but 2007 I can report live from the floor by the shampoo bar.
Dead helpful, me.
;D
-
sounds good, I will probably join in with the DFH crew updates :D
-
I'd be happy to help, I just hope I don't have that much to do as I would have had a Spa - quite a costly weekend for some of them
-
Any news on this GF ?
