Title: OT not cars but football
Post by: vqdave on August 09, 2006, 09:35:20 am
I know its not car racing, but what with the new football season round the corner and me sorting out this years fantasy league side, I was wondering if anyone here plays www.fantasyleague.com ,  and if so and they aren't already in their own league would they fancy joining in with mine? Or if not do they fancy it? Tenner for the year, and you get to be beaten and ridiculed for it by me, what more could you want.

We are a bit depleted in numbers this year, people moving houses and jobs etc.

As i say, its pretend pig skin kicking, not motor racing in any form, not even pretend racing like F1. So i will surely get booted off for spamming but the offer is there. let me know and i will PM our league PIN number.

I think this topic  has been mentioned before and was on the agenda to be dicussed at the Poo Bar, but there must have been some alcohol involved cos we   obviously both forgot about it.

I am getting too old  for a game but I'm sure we can discuss and agree/disagree with each other over a few beers.

Which campsite are you using?

Bob

As an afterthought I must also mention that I am definately to old now, but I did enjoy playing both, main reason being, that as a prop I got my hands on the ball a lot more often at league.

Do you remember when the namby pamby Wigan boys won the Middlesex sevens? (which incidentally are on this weekend).

I've only ever played Union but love watching League. I think if watch the modern game you'll see it's far removed from the grim, muddy, oop-n-under days of Eddie Wareing. It is, in short, a terrific spectator sport.

I remember that... and they were mighty impressive too.. and then there was the influx of the players to union on the back of it.. so league then had to start 'glamorising' to keep the best players ;)

Andy ;D

Yes I agree the glamourising was totally ridiculous. I mean, the Keighley Cougars? What the f**k is that all about? I'll bet a cougar has never ever set foot in bloody Keighley. They might as well be called the Keighley Condoms for all the relevance the name has to the continent they play in, let alone the country or local area they hail from. It's the same level of glamour (and intelligence) as people from the UK who dress up as cowboys and go away on wild west weekends at a caravan site in Bognor Regis in November.

I went to Twickenham  4/5  years ago to see the Union vs League game. The first half was played with League rules and the second with Union. The Union side was slaughtered in the first half and I expected a complete reversal in the second. Not a chance the league guys won, not by such a big margin, but they showed the Union guys a thing or two.

The crowd I went with, all from Beaconsfield Rugby Club, were all die hard Union fans and didn't think much of "Those Northern poofs coming down here to show us their watered down poncy rugby"

There was a lot of huffing and puffing going on during the second half as the League guys were banging in the tries, and even they had to concede that league was a whole lot better than they expected.

I was brought up on Union and have never been to a league game so I am a bit bias. I must try it next time we are oop t north visiting the sister in law. You never know , I might enjoy it.

I must have a google and find out why there are two codes when it started out as one.

I got it

The schism between union and league
For more details see History of rugby league

It is believed that Yorkshire inaugurated amateurism rules in 1879, their representitives along with Lancashire's, are creditied with formalising the RFU's first amateur rules in 1886. Despite popular belief, these Northern bodies were strong advocates of amateurism, leading numerous crusades against veiled professionalism. However, conflict arose over the controversy regarding broken time, the issue of whether players should receive compensation for injuries received whilst playing. The northern clubs were heavily populated by a working class, and thus, a large pool of players would either not turn out for their clubs due to working commitments, or forgo pay to play rugby. In 1892, allegations of player payments were directed at the Bradford and Leeds clubs, though this was not the first allegation towards these northern bodies, that is not to say southern bodies had not been involved in similar circumstances. The RFU became concerned that these broken time payments were a pathway to professionalism.

On August 29, 1895 at a meeting at the George Hotel, Huddersfield, twenty clubs from Yorkshire, Lancashire and Cheshire decided to resign from the RFU and form the Northern Rugby Football Union which from 1922 would be known as the Rugby Football League. In 1908, eight clubs in Sydney break away from union and form the New South Wales Rugby League. The dispute about payment was one which at the time was also affecting soccer and cricket. Each game had to work out a compromise; Rugby was the least successful at doing this. It would be a century before union legalised payments to players and would allow players who had played a game of league (even at an amateur level) to play in a union game.

Sorry Dave,  Thread well and truly highjacked.

Bob

briefly it started in Huddersfeild (and I know that a giant has never been near Huddersfield), when a group of northern based Rugby union clubs wanted to pay there players, and the old farts at Twickenham exiled them from the RFU. there was a lot more to it, but that is the brief explanation. A fact that is not wideley known however, is that there are more Rugby Union clubs ni Yorkshire than there are in any other county. In my home town of Leeds there are 15 union clubs, with many more in the surrounding towns.

The next time you are up north PM me and I will arrange a visit to a league game.

Sounds good to me Neal.  The sister in law lives in Lepton near Huddersfield, we have to visit some time before Crimbo so I will let you know when and maybe we could take in a game.

Errrmmmm - NO  :(

Not a 'Bean' anyway - don't mind being called a 'Toffee' as I did acheive my dream of being a 'Toffee Lady' at Goodison when I was young and gorgeous.

Anyway - I can't stay chatting as I have 75kk to spend on men for my FF team - The lovely lovely Duncan Ferguson is apparently not available for purchase which is a big shame.

Thanks for the link VQ I will proceed as instructed.

What a charmer!

I am up at the Rugby club tomorrow with some girlfriends – forcing myself to watch men playing with odd shaped balls -  just for the heck of it.

Should I look out for the Galant?
