Thanks to all for your good wishes. The Doc confirmed this morning that I didn't need a neck brace despite the mild neck pain that has developed. Purely muscular, so no worse than after a trip to the gym. (look it up on google H  ;))

I've driven the same road this afternoon in my wife's car. Was good to get right back in the saddle as it were. (no she doesn't drive a horse) The telegraph pole has been replaced... if only they were that quick to fix pot-holes/dented road signs etc.

The one thing that caused most damage is the one thing they put back within a couple of days. Typical! What about filling in the ditch, or perhaps putting down some non-slip tarmac!?

I can offer some good discount on some various surgical aids Russ. Whether or not they would do your neck any good is open to question, but it might be worth a try, just to get that 'crick' out.
Really, if it's a black spot, the council should put up a barrier, or failing that you could try dressing a little Barbie doll up as an angel and pinning it to the pole (not in a cruciform pose, for chrissakes!) with some pansies. That normally slows the traffic down.

It's official... after the insurance assessment they have classified it as not economical to repair.

"Written off" to anyone outside the insurance industry!

But the good news is... they valued it at £500 more than I paid for it a year ago when there was 20k miles less on the clock. So there's a silver lining after all.

One point to note though...

The insurance assessor said to me "Was there an audio system?" to which I said "The last time I looked, yes. 'Cos the recovery truck driver handed me the CD that was in it.  By the time the car was recovered from the ditch it was too late to take it to the approved assessors garage so it stayed the night at the Recovery depot at Newport Pagnel M1 service station... and some fecker's gone and half inched the CD player!!!

Moral of the story... whip it out yourself 'cos the insurance company don't seem to care!

Sorry Russ have to own up it was me, needed it for my new haircut 100 CD ;)

Don't forget Russ, that's their opening Gambit. I'vknown several people who've gone back to the insurance company and pushed them for more! That said, I'm not sure if they might also reserve the right to offer you less??

Presumably the car's CD player is already included in their offer figure? If not, would that be covered on your house insurance?

as a former employee of Pru working in claims i can strongly recommend you try and push for more, we always offered bottom book price.  The motor engineer always gave a top and bottom figure, don't be too greedy or silly with your reply, no chane of buying the salvage ??
