Yes indeed, VERY lucky escape. The Mrs and I were sitting up in turn 4 and saw the whole thing break out. I was very concerned immediately after the shunt, seeing the state of the car and the gestures of the marshal's. But once you could see movement from cockpit my anxiety relaxed. Terrific drive from Dario, easily the class of the field all day, in torrid conditons. This was my thirty eighth Indy 500, and I'm having a difficult time remembering one in more sweltering heat Another highlight of the day was Tony Kanaan's "burn from the stern" job, having started dead last, to fighting for the lead in the closing laps until a late splash & dash for fuel.
As far as debris fencing? Yeah, the are tines when its pretty damn obvious its required, especially when the spectators are sitting literally a few feet away from racing cars travelling 228 MPH
