FOS Goodwood 2013

Dates announced today :
The 2013 Festival of Speed will now take place on 12-14 July, with the Moving Motor Show being held on Thursday 11 July.

Thinking about (finally) getting over there next year. 
Any suggestions on accomodations to stay near the FOS or is it easy to get in from Portsmouth ?

Unless you're happy to get up REALLY early to reach the venue as it opens then I'd avoid Portsmouth.

The road from there to Goodwood is the A27 and is always full from quite early in the morning.  I have sat in 4 mile traffic jams on more than 1 occasion.

There is camping on-site, but it's very expensive.

If you are happy to camp then check out the Camping & Caravanning Club's website [http://www.campingandcaravanningclub.co.uk/] for details of local campsites.  If you cannot get anything immediately around Chichester then I'd look to the north around Petersfield, Midhurst & Petworth.

The alternative is to catch a train in to Chichester.  There is then a bus service to the site.  Return journey is £5.  There is a good train service along the south coast from Southampton to Brighton, so that could potentially open up some alternative places to stay.

You can camp at The Anglesey Arms fairly cheap. It was £10 per person a couple of years ago and within walking distance.

I would second Rhinos suggestion of The Anglesey Arms at Halnaker.  It is easily within walking distance, the food is excellent as are the ales, and they do Leffe on tap, even served in the correct glasses.  Myself and Sceetum stopped there only for one drink while cycling home a few years ago after the festival, and eventually had to be picked up by his wife.  We collected the bikes fairly late the next morning......

Yes...sadly the only thing bad about the FOS is that lots of people found out about it. 

When I first time I went, it was busy, but there was always somewhere decent to stand to watch the cars go up the hill.  Now I gather it's rather less palletable in terms of the hustle and bustle - which is a shame. 

As for roads - no idea - I just remember it being a major PITA getting in and out - I suspect it has gotten worse since then too - this is what happens when you put a major motor racing event, in someones front garden.....

Two pieces of advice...

1: Get there early (as soon as the gates open) to actually be able to see the cars before the hoards of people arrive.
2: Stand down at the start for a bit.  Actually - if they still do the passout hand stamps  get one and go out the gate down there so you can see the cars pre start.  Someone still in the UK should be able to confirm if this is still an option.

Oh, and avoid the  F1 paddock once the drivers arrive.  It's bloody bedlam and you're likely to get knocked over by a heard of chavs running after a driver like they've never seen another living breathing human being before.

As Brad says, the only sad thing about it is that so many people go these days.  Still worth doing though.

Agreed. FOS is just full of chavs and Made in Chelsea 'stars' these days. It wouldn't be too bad if one was allowed to take a rifle in, but its frowned upon today the least. Go to Angouleme in September instead.

FOS has certainly moved on (in the wrong direction, IMHO) since the intimate early days.
I appreciate that successful events will eventually draw the 'weekend' racing fans, but the whole event has just got far too big and lost sight of the original meaning.

Well, to be honest that's life, we inevitably move on from the intimate early days. A once charming and open smile becomes a snarling grimace.

And that bottomless black void begins to tug at your very soul. We're all shuffling to that precipitous edge above the blackest pit of hopelessness.

The "Festival of Greed"

As has Le Mans, back in 98 I spent 120 French francs (about £12) on a week ticket, bought a houx annexe ticket at the gate and sat in the grandstand on my own at midnight to watch the cars. Now the event is packed and the true fans are swamped by very important pricks. Bring back the old days of these events!

"The right crowd and no crowding" was the ethos at Brooklands at the start of motor racing. Unfortunatley that would proclude 99% of us on social status and cost of tickets. We have also contributed to the numbers and supossed success of events such as FOS and LM by enthusing about it here. So I propose we all shut up and buy Enigma machines and only communicate about the good times we have in code. That should sort it.

I work for the company who do the food and drink for FOS. I am there from 5.30am to 9.00pm each day of the event.The advantage is that I am also there 2 days before the start so see everything before it goes daft.
