True, back in the 'good old days' they certainly built things to last.

I once owned a 1962 Cadillac that was made from the hull plating of a supertanker.  No wonder it weighed so much

Not quite as exotic as a Cadillac, but I had a 1956 Morris Oxford when I was at college.  Bloody thing was built like a tank.  Chassis made from a couple of RSJ's.  No crumple zones on that baby.  It just destroyed anything that got in the way.

I sideswiped a Ford Escort in the Cadillac and smashed up the Ford's front and rear wings and both doors.  It was pretty impressive - a write off

Just to prove the Commer's a totally versatile vehicle and tough as old boots, I am hoing to try out the swimming pool idea over the Xmas holiday. Will post some pics here later if we get around to it.

The Commer has no rust but I think the pool chemicals, chlorine etc will soon be nibbling it away. Mind you, it could do with a wash, as I took it to a 4X4 day at the weekend and it's now very muddy.

Does that mean you're considering a 4x4 conversion to the Commer ?

It would entail a whole new front suspension. The original design is based on the 50's Humber Hawk and there is no facility for drive shafts, hub carriers etc. Anyway, it would roll very easily off road. The front axle width is very narrow, about 14 inches in from the bodywork/wheelarches each side. This is why it handles like a Reliant 3 wheeler.

BTW, did a massive powerslide round a traffic island yesterday, with armfuls of opp lock, holding it out on the gas. There were some cyclists pissing themselves! Not sure if it was fright or laughter.

Excellent, you can't beat a good armfull of oversteer.  I take my hat off to you.

I could take the detachable "pop top" roof off the Commer, line the back out with thick black plastic fish pond liner and fill the back with water up to the windows> Instant mobile indoor swimming pool.

That scheme worked well for the guys driving a Land Rover 130 Defender crew cab in Karting Nord this year, complete with drinks and brolly - sadly no tasty wenches decorating their pool side though...

This was our swimming pool effort last year. We paid 60 Euros in the Carrefor close to the circuit.
