Blog or no blog?
« on: January 16, 2004, 09:57:56 am »
I am thinking about setting up a 'weblog' system here at Arnage Towers.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with the 'Blog' it's an online journal system where you can keep a 'dear diary' that you can open up to other members to read or comment on (if you allow them to).  Examples of weblogs can be found at sites like http://www.blurty.com/ and http://www.bloopdiary.com/main.php

Also thinking of providing email accounts in the form "myname@clubarnage.com" that you can access over the web (like hotmail).

Any thoughts?

I am rather unfamiliar with the concept of a 'Blog', so am unable to comment at this time.  However, I'll have a trawl around on the links you posted and see if I can get a feel for it.
I must say, I am, inherently, lazy and do not write a diary or personal log on a daily basis elsewhere.

I like the idea of the 'yourname@clubarnage.com'.  Hopefully the service would come with some kind of spam filter as I am inundated with spam mail (which I have software filtered) at other e-mail accounts.

Thanks for all the fine work you do for CA, the site and forum are first class.

added -
I've had a look at the sites and they seem to be populated by people who spend too much time in front of a PC monitor - or is that me also - whooopps !!

Please don't get me wrong here GF, but I've just had a quick look at the second of your links, and this place strikes me as somewhere for people who don't get out too much.  Personally I prefer direct human interaction, although this particular forum (CA) is a wonderous exception to my normal rule.  Having also already got 2 e-mail adresses I don't need another.

Nice of you to offer such services, and good luck, but I shall not be partaking.

Dave,

I think the e mail is a good idea, i could be swayed especially if other t shirts etc are produced ofr next year , or something else simular.

Otherwise i am happy with the 3 address's i have already.

The bloop thingy sounds good , although it takes me an hour a day to read all the forum posts at the moment. I too , wouldnt update the diary .

I must add that this is the best forum i have found and use on the net at the moment. Probably as its closly guarded from Smut and idiots.

I would happily do a diary of my Le Mans , but if Rich ( Le Mans SPS ) gets his life in gear and stops playing computer games , our SPS website may actually  be more than what it is at the moment. I would then add my ramblings onto robbo's Ramblings page or simular , negating my need to publish just how good my Le mans week is.

Would the e mail name slow down the site ?? By placing a greater need on the servers ?

Dave

I would go for the email address thing. At least I stand a chance of being able to remember it, unlike a couple of other addresses I have and have totally forgotten about.

The diary is not for me personally, though others may use it.

Keep up the good CA work, it is much appreciated.
I wouldn't sit there if I were you, it's still a bit wet.

Great work on the site and thanks for thinking of ways to further develop what is already a great forum.   Like the others, it's a no to the journals and a possible for the e-mail address.   Another thought - what about a search facility for the posts?

I would use a CA email addy too, but as to the blog, would you need it to be updated daily? There is a lot of commitment to doing a blog, it has to be a hobby in itself.

I'm pretty much the same as everyone else. CA email would be a great idea, especially for emailing members of the forum, i.e. CAName@clubarnage.com but I doubt if I'd use the WebLog.

Looks like a OUI on the email and a NON on the blog.

Would it be webmail or pop3/smtp you would prefer?
(or maybe both)

You could use your forum handle with an underscore
for spaces. Mine would be Grand_Fromage@clubarnage.com

It would be made available only to 'regular' forum posters
to start with then maybe wider than that at a later date.

What mailbox size would be minimum?

pop3/smtp probably best for me.

Depending on which route you choose will be the major factor in what size mailbox you'll need. Downloading from pop3 you probably shouldn't need any more than 10Mb. However, if it's webmail and people are saving posts and attachments then 10Mb can dissapear pretty quickly.
