The grand old man of French motor racing died on sunday. He won LM in 1954 with Gonzalez in a Ferrari. He also won the Monaco GP in 55 and 58.

He was at the Classic LM in July to wave off the first race with Henri Pescarolo. I was priviledged enough to be there and I recall they didn't half make a fuss of him. He probably deserved it!

Sad news indeed.  As well as being one of the great French drivers of the immediate post-war period (along with Raymond Sommer, Jean Behra and Jean Pierre Wimille) he played a starring role in the rise of British teams to prominence in the late fifties, being a driver for both Vanwall and Rob Walker's fledgling team alongside Stirling Moss.
