planning for mishaps isn't within my scope, I never take the extended warranty etc, and usually only pay for insurance where its compulsory, (check a post of mine regarding insurance for a 911)

Don't believe in burglar alarms but close my windows at night cos it gets cold up north.

I did take out insurance 2 years ago but cancelled it because it didn't cover industrial action! (train strike).

As it says on the ticket "motorsport is dangerous", Life in western europe is almost too safe, over regulation and "compensation culture" make it so.

Taking no insurance is as dangerous as it gets!

I'll throw a dice and see what it says! roll on the 16th!

IMO you'd be nuts to travel without travel insurance.  The E111 might get you hospital treatment but it isn't going to get you transported home if you have a serious injury or major illness that requires specialist transport home and stuff like that.

To give you some idea of costs to be got home from France after an accident, my travel insurance covered the following to get me home last April:

Taxi to airport  297 euros
3 seats on the plane, so I could keep leg straight.
7 seat taxi from stansted to home. (£100?)
Doctors bill, 200 euro.
Pharmacy bill 150 euro.

Also they set everything up after 1 phone call from me, and paid all bills direct.

Won't leave the country without decent insurance, all an E111 could do is save you your excess.

Who were you insured with Barry? always good to have a reference that has been proven. Last year we had to cancle a trip to the US because of the Mother in law passing away - insured with the Inter Group via Ebookers - bunch of A***holes, delayed paying untill December.

Just got back from the Post office after picking up the forms, you need to fill both in (I couldn't figure that out on the internet, hence the trip there) Also you can use your NI number if you don't know your NHS number (or aren't registered with a doctor)

I'm sure that'll all be of great comfort to your family if they have the misfortune of funding either numerous trips out to visit you because you've been hospitalised or trying to fly you home 'cos you fell off a kerb and broke a leg  ::) ::)

Bump, cos I was not going I did not check my card untill today and found it ran out on the 2/6/2011, so I have just been to http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Diol1/DoItOnline/DG_4018163 to renew it, no charge, just need your old card to pull the refrence from it. They say will send it within 7 working days. Now just need to confirm the travel insurance with Nationwide is sufficient and all sorted.

Don't delay.  I renewed mine a month ago and it took nearly two weeks.
