WRs?? I could understand the WM Peugeots being allowed to run, because it was for the honour of France - the 2 hours life at full boost engine meant they could lead the race for the first half hour, and then try for 250 mph when the air cooled. They didn't really get in the way, and it was traditional to have a French loony somewhere.
The Brits loved it, especially when Roger Dorchy, leading the race, turned left at the end of the Mulsanne straight, instead of right.
