Getting to Le Mans
« on: December 08, 2005, 06:51:50 pm »
Some people might be interested to know the good news that the A28 (motorway) opened between Rouen and Alencon at the end of October.  This cuts aboout an hour off the journey from the northern ports of Dieppe, Calais etc. and means that if you're in a rush you can take motorway all the way to Le Mans.   :)

Bad news is it's a peage and costs 10 euroquids.   :(

So it was!!
I know there's another thread open somewhere, but this is just to tell you that the new Rouen - Alencon section of the A 28 was opened today.
The Eccomoy - Tours section will open in December.

I think it'll save me more than half an hour Lorry.

If it can keep me out of that industrial area at Rouen it'll save me pulling my hair out too!

Rouen is still the problem. The new road aims to the left of Rouen, so there's hope for a new bridge and bypass.

You'd think they could have got that right, wouldn't you? When our ministry built the first motorway it was intended as a by-pass round Preston.

If ever a place needed by-passing more than Preston...

I don't know what the signposting is like around Rouen for the new motorway, but here in Alencon they forgot to put up any signs for it.  And when they did they pointed the sign for Rouen in the direction of Le Mans!

where abouts do we pick the new road up? is it before Rouen or is it after the roundabout with all the plastic cows on it.

The new bit fills in the gap in the the A28 - it now runs from Calais to Le Mans and on to the south-west of France.  Until October there was a gap between Rouen and Alencon and you had to take the road of death, the N138.

Geordie, make me a happy man, tell me that the trip "Through" Rouen is now one of choice rather than necessity.... please.

The map on the A28 website showed it ending at the Caen Rouen Motorway, a few miles from the "Rondpoint aux Vaches"

Please, somebody make my day, tell me it goes all the way to the Calais road

Sorry to ruin your day Lorry, but you still have to go through Rouen, or cross the Seine at the Pont de Brotonne south of Yvetot.

Whats the road over Pont De Brotonne like - is this to be a CA recommended route?

I hadn't realised there was a bridge between Tancarville and Rouen, I thought it was all National Park

Yep - the Rouen western bypass is at the planning stage and the (badly needed) eastern bypass is still under consideration.  So the stop-start-beat-the lights-chop-the-lanes game around Rouen goes on for the time being.  You don't want it too easy, do you?   :P

From Maporama, it seems about 10 miles longer through Yvetot.  Must be worth a try, as I haven't found a bad road in France yet, except the Periphique/Rouen etc
