June 6, 1944
« on: June 06, 2003, 02:52:12 pm »
I was 11 years old when I heard that the Allied invasion of Europe had begun. Believe it or not I stopped in church during my lunch time.
I did not know it at the time but my father's brother was with the 29th Infantry Division. That outfit was the cannon fodder that came ashore at Omaha Beach. One year later my Uncle Will came home, went in business with my Dad and for years jerked around  at hearing any sudden noise.
What a date it has remained in my life.

I agree Pidgeon.

Strangely enough, I just had a text from a mate who comes with us to Le Mans. Simply said, "Typical D Day weather".

It's because of the sacrifices made that day that we can go to Le Mans.

I wouldn't sit there if I were you, it's still a bit wet.

  • You don't win Le Mans - you outlast it.

That's right... makes you think.
I don't care - I'm a racing driver and I'm here to win, not to finish third.

Quite right.

Mind you, next week is starting to look like it might be along the same lines as 59 years ago............

Up to your knees in mud, sh1te and prone bodies.

A lull in the action allows for a footie match ( I think that was the 14-18 war though).

We might even have to exchange tins of spam and bully beey with the dirty rotten stinking Hun!

Whatever. For the sacrifises and effort made in 1944, we are indeed able to now invade France for a few days with a sense of pride.

Enjoy the trip everybody.

BBC had some good stuff on their new page this AM. Previously unreleased photos giving details of 5 or 6 specific locations with text from those who were there.
Horrific
My eternal gratitude to those who did this for the rest of us
Does it really only have full throttle

Can French people invade USA in return of La Fayette during the independance war ?  ;)
Le Mans is life, anything before and after is just waiting...

... it's not the taking part but the winning that counts !

Always try and stop at one of the D Day sites on the way back from Le Mans. Usally dark and very atmospheric.
Makes you thankful for what they did.
Never argue with an idiot, they'll only drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.
