Youngs brewery in Wandsworth closed today :( :( :(

Thankyou Young's for:

Young's Bitter
Young's Special
Ram Rod and Special
Evil hangover's
Possible liver damage
Losing my car one night
Not remembering what I did on many evenings

But most of all brewing a very good pint.

I'm with you there Barry, R.I.P. indeed. It's heartbreaking, I wasn't aware of the death of Young's, following Brakespear's. what a waste.... Still hope springs, will the brewing be moved elsewhere??

Hi Sav

Production moving to the Wells brewery in Bedford.
Unlikely to stay the same product though, change of breweries never seem to produce the same flavour/character.

Similar thing has happened here in Hampshire. Gales brewery was bought out by Fullers recently and the production moved to London. They have tried their best to keep the product the same though by using the same hops and yeast and treating the water so it chemicaly matched the water used at the Hampshire brewery.

I haven't had any Gales since they shutdown Horndean, still in mourning. :(
Have they succeeded in recreating Horndean's best?
Even if they have I suspect if you try it in 10 years it will have the corporate taste.

I am AM 'ampshire boy  & FSB don't sound right even if they are using HSB etc.
I am missing the seasonal ales when i went to cowplain resently.

The story run in one of the London papers on Tuesday reported that there had been a brewery on the site sionce 1581.

Talking of the dead, what happened to the evil dead, Double Diamond, LongLife, Worthington E or that filth Red Barrell. They weren't brewed for that length of time but they tasted as if they had been. Gruesome.

Double Diamond is still on sale at our local community centre. It's the only place that I have seen it for years.

If I remember right it was awful stuff so what they are still selling is probably left overs from the 70s

Oh to remember the lunches of pints of 'mixed' (1/2ordinary-1/2special for the unitiatiated) or Ram&Spec for the latecomers.....
I have some hazy recollections but I presume that that's all the fault of the Ram&Spec!

The 'mixed' won't ever be quite the same methinks!

very fond memories of brewing day, what a stink, what great beer, not sure, but I seem to remember a passport system, whereby you visited all Youngs Hostelleries and have you passport stamped the net result was a certificate, never did get round to all of them, it was fun trying though.

From distant memory you got a 'passport andhad to get it stamped in all Young's pubs within a certain time (one month?) and you were then awarded a tie, other paraphinalia and ......a barrel of Youngs! I must admit that realism/cowardice took over and I never undertook the task!

Did any CA members?

I am sure that they would have fond memories (!)
