Butane v Propane

Can anyone tell me the difference between Butane and Propane gases. I have always used butane (blue cylander) in the past but have aquired a propane (red) cylander.

I know that the fitting for the regulators are different so they are not interchangeable.

Will a BBQ and double burner cooker work on either gas?

I think the main difference is the pressure its stored at. Propane is stored at a higher pressure and has a lower freezing point so the cylinders/regulators work okay in the winter... hopefully not too much of a problem for next month!

Propane(red) burns hotter then Butane(Blue) but Propane(red) cylinders are always smaller and heavier, due to the pressure.

We use Propane(red) during the winter and sometimes in the summer. The biggest difference I think you will find that NO Propane(red) regulators are clip on making them harder to change.

We always take a Butane (Blue) 7Kg Cylinder to Le Mans, The equivelent is the 6Kg Propane (Red).

Hey Bob, there has been a lot of hoo-ha in the camper mags/forums about waxy goo forming in the regulators of peeps using propane, think the main tip is keep the regulator higher than the pipework and that seems to sort it?

how bad are hexamine explosions? I'm far too frightened  to use either gas now...

candles? Is it safe to cook over candles?

That second picture wasn't explosion. That was the MGer's campsite just after they left ;D
