Daily Express quote
« on: May 09, 2008, 01:16:20 pm »
Todays Daily Express includes a  review of the book    Steve McQueen : A Life in Pictures.

The review includes the quote.

"He was also passionate about speed, collecting sports vehicles and taking part in contests from local motor races to the 24-hour Le Mans rally."

Rally?  ??? It's never looked much like a rally to me.

Perhaps the ACO will let us stand out on the Mulsanne with a camera and jump back into the trees half a second before an Audi R10 screams past, sorry I meant glides past, at 200mph.

Fairly standard from the 'uneducated' press...
I remember the review of Heart Like A Wheel, the Shirley Muldowney biopic.
The Times said it was the story of the first woman Formula One driver.

Even the specialist press get it strangely wrong though.
Motorsport News Sub-headline a short while back..

Danica Patrick, the worlds fastest female (sic)

Surely they mean 'the worlds fastest female whose name isnt Muldowney, Troxel, Force, Berstatd, Oberg, Callin, Nystad, Jacobsen etc, etc etc...'?

.... Kitty O'Neil  is currently the worlds fastest female (on land).

Kitty O'Neil (USA) holds the record for the fastest land speed achieved by a women having reached 524.030 mph in the rocket powered three wheeled SM1 Motivator in the Alvard Desert, Oregon, USA, on Dec 6th 1976.

You mean they allow stagecoaches to use the tracks too?

Wow! That has to be difficult for the racecar drivers though surely?

Still I suppose they get told the time of the next stage.

Wot's F1?

Wottsit say about the book?

Suppose I'd better have fish and chips tonight so I can get a chance to read the article

Don't go to Mere Green Chippy for christ sake Bill. Or that one at the parade of shops by Kingstanding playing fields. You don't want to eat nothing from them.

I usually go to Bakers Lane

or Lambeth Rd

aint deaded yet...

 ;)

Went to Mere Green many years ago when it was  the only place within getting food within my breaktime

wasnt superb but I have had worserer

then again at least I can find chippies round here

Has anyone ever driven off the M40 on the way home from Le Mans into High Wycombe looking for a chippy?

No bloody chance and I drove around the central bit a couple of times

plenty of pizza joints but not a sniff of God's Supper

(roof down in the Midge is usually good for chippie sensing)

Boody hell, Bishop's supermarket! I remember that! It must have gone by the mid seventies.

The rat pie was the reason I told Bill to avoid that particular chippy. I'm not going to say why, but it involved a chicken's beak with nostrils and a few short feathers still attached...   :o :P
