46  Club Arnage / General Discussion / Re: Bad News, Good News on: June 03, 2015, 09:39:22 am
Cheers for the heads-up. We've got folks trying to get to Arnage and seems will need to teach them the back route in which will be fun on Thursday afternoon when other roads are reserved for Audis, Toyotas, Porsches and Astons etc only!!

Will be trying to detail instructions for my folk but in short it will be
A28 to Le Mans
A11 to Paris
A28 to Orleans/Blois/Tours
Exit 24 to Ruaudin
then Mulsanne and the delights of the diversion through Monce-en-Berlin back to Virage d'Arnage!

Saw it from the N13 on way to St Mere Eglise. Didn't go in but seems like fun, website here.

You need a couple of weeks ...!

Spent about 5 hours at Pegasus Bridge & museum on Saturday just gone, personally think it is great. Even better as had just read the book by Stephen E. Ambrose. Museum does have a high personal content (plenty of family donations) which may not be your cuppa though.

Also did Maisie battery between Omaha & Utah, trumps Pointe du Hoc in a big way in terms of relevance. Stuff is just creeping out of secret files after 70 years and seems the Rangers were (may have been/allegedly) told to go for Maisie at short notice before D-Day but ignored the order. And in any event their target was not Pointe du Hoc, it was actually another (third) battery whose name escapes me.

The American Cemetery at Omaha has a good museum - paid a return visit last Friday.

If you are going to spend time at Arromanches the PlayStore App - Arromanches 1944 - is definitely worth playing with in advance. and is a fair substitute (IMHO) for the museum there. Problem with the museums is they close at 18:00 and the App is 24/7. We navigated down to the beach at Asnelles (small signpost off D514) which is one of the App points of view. Almost definitely worth timing any visit to Arromanches to be at low tide so you can see more of the breakwater remnants.

Remember enjoyed the Canadian Museum on Juno Beach on a previous visit - didn't make it this time though.

Personally was underwhelmed by both the Tapestry and Memorial Museum in Bayeux on a previous visit so skipped Bayeux completely last week.

I do make a pilgrimage to St Mere Eglise every time I have a chance (and again last Friday). Probably mainly because of the scenes in The Longest Day. But in fact is a relatively long way from anything else and is becoming pretty much a tourist trap so unless you have loads of time is missable.

There are tons of other museums around - Tank Museum, Reporters Museum etc - depends on your poison! Let alone various places for degustation of Cidre, Calvados et al.

Went down to Normandy this weekend for a bit of museum time and a bit of a planning session for June. Haven't seen it logged here so figured worth reporting Pont Mathilde back in service with no problems. On way down there seems to be some diversion debris around the services near J11 but electronic display is off.

Went out Eurotunnel around noon on 30th zero delays/ problems at folkestone. Had done API on web. Came back 21h00 Monday,  Calais a complete joke with UK passport control the apparent bottleneck. About 25 mins from completing check-in till clearing passport control.

Wow, and that looks like it goes through the middle of the campsite at Arnage too.

Aricus

My latest update says the campsite will be preserved. The (public) road will leave the track about 200m before Indianapolis and join the D139 at a (new) roundabout between the 2 Arnage carparks.
52  Club Arnage / General Discussion / Re: Do you care about F1, or is it just as a feeder series for endurance racing? on: March 01, 2015, 08:46:00 pm
Ditto Dottore, Barry, Fax.

First race was camping at Kyalami in late 60s. Don't remember much except climbing through the fences Thursday evening so pocket money could go on food, walking round the track Friday night (a good idea at the outset, takes a lot longer on foot than on wheels with a few spare BHP), race day was Saturday in those days and the scream of the BRMs.
53  Club Arnage / General Discussion / Re: 2015 date? on: June 18, 2014, 02:43:59 am

It's got to be the 13th and 14th.

I'm sure that it's the same number of weeks into the year, but cannot seem to  find the exact formula.
Yup, the 24th weekend of the year (barring odd exception), the French do have a sense of tradition   Grin So 13/14 June 2015 is a reasonable bet.

Les Epicuriens du Virage d'Arnage

Advance party out DFDS Sunday 8 June 12:00, hitting Arnage Tuesday (hopefully)
Back Sunday 15 June DFDS @ 23:00

Total gang 24 by Friday night dribbling in from various points at various times including 8 virgins, 3 911s, 2 bikes, a refrigerated van, a couple of chelsea tractors and some other tat including the Verso carrying #77 to keep madam happy about Dr Dreamy.

ps - each year we have fun with the French getting onto Arnage on Tuesday as it only opens on Wednesday (allegedly). In the event we fail this year, if anyone is prepared to loan a ticket for any other site for 1 night only, Tuesday, would be much appreciated. Have in mind the need to yell for help (if we need it) late Tuesday and be gone by sparrow fart on Weds. Please pm me.
57  Club Arnage / General Discussion / Re: Club Arnage Flags on: July 30, 2013, 01:47:36 am
With all due respect to those who did the original artwork and design what do folks feel about having a second alternative design?  eg
Dayglo yellow attracts insects like crazy. May be less of a problem on flags than the t-shirts I did but beware.

Certainly 5*3 in the lightest polyester flies really well from the 7m fibreglass poles we have on our pitch. Quality linen flags are too heavy and even worse when wet.
58  Club Arnage / General Discussion / Re: Rouen and A28 traffic chaos on: June 17, 2013, 08:56:40 pm
Came through Rouen with no problems of any kind 18h00 on Sunday.  Just follow the diversion on the electronic sign (first) as per other thread (involved a150 and a151). By the time you get close to Rouen Le Mans is signposted at each junction.  But absolutely painless. Huge delays on a13 towards Paris and other roads we could see in Rouen but the diversion route flowed smoothly at speed limit the whole way.

Lunchtime Tuesday, Arnage.
60  Club Arnage / General Discussion / Re: What Percentage is for the racing? on: May 23, 2013, 01:23:57 am
+1 for a percentage approaching 4 digits.

And as a relative newbie (9th attendance this year) I recognise the increasing sterility in the last 10 years but there are still opportunities to evade the sterility. 'nuff said - haven't been caught yet. And that makes it a unique experience for me with another category that scores 80%.
