Title: Seb*ing 2007
Post by: rcutler on September 23, 2006, 06:50:58 pm
OK, so while I am thinking about the flights accomodation and stuff I thought it about time to start the official thread.

I have not booked a flight yet but WILL be going.

Who is going?
What date and time are you booking your flights?
Are we going to have official T-shirts?

Great! It might even be worth looking into flying into Amsterdam first. At the moment we have a quote for € 464,- Amsterdam - Miami. That's £ 317.80 in Sterling, might be worth flying to Amsterdam first maybe?

Quote
Who is going?
Turn 10 is set to become pretty much orange for 2007 as at least 12 of us will attend 8)
Looks like Roy, Pieter, Marius, Johan, Martijn, Paul, Floris, Marc, Julian, Leontien, JanFrans, Sebastian and myself

Quote
What date and time are you booking your flights?
At the moment we're looking at March 9 to 19 for the most of us.

Quote
Are we going to have official T-shirts?
Why not. I can look into that if required, like the last edition of Sebring :)

I'd like to make the trip , it would be very much a short holiday for me probably 5 days max, its about 50/50 now, but heres hoping.

I think we need a new section for info and topics relating to the other races, (sebring, donnington, spa etc) keeping it all together makes it far easier to find info when trying to plan how to get there etc, without having to re ask.

What do other members think?

A New Topic from the main page would be a great idea!

For directions to sebring the following may be useful

http://www.us.map24.com/

I had tried the AAA site but membership was needed to access the maps.

Zip codes for the airports are

Miami - 33122 , Orlando - 32827 and the circuit is 33870.

Its a mere 88 miles from orlando or 160 from Miami, no distance at all really.

Will be attending but no bookings as of yet. Will most likely fly into Miami on Tuesday March 13 where I will help Pidge load the van for arrival in Seb*ing on Wednesday. On Sunday after the race I will visit my brother in Longwood and then I/(we???) will be staying "somewwhere" in Florida for a weeks vacation. It`s then off north to visit the rest of the family for a week or so then return to Munich around April 3 or 4. I am in no big hurry to book as the prices here in Germany for the needed March flights have become cheaper (at least they have in the past 3 years) in the months after the end of the summer season, don`t really know why that is, but it is.

I think paying only £287.60 in the BA sale is worthy of being a bit previous!

Are you going to sell me your Billingham?

Just booked my flights. Virgin, LGW to Orlando Thursday 15 March 11:15 - arrive at the airport then straight to the track. Return is on Sunday 24 March at 20:55, all for £313. I've never booked it this early but I currently have permission - so strike while the iron is hot I say!

Now, where can I book that C300? (I already know...but we decided it might be a bit bling for Daytona or Key West or wherever we end up for the days after the race)

Yes, I know it's still 3 months away!

  • My initial plans are to fly to Orlando either Wednesday or Thursday before the race.
  • Down to the old bomber base for some Sam Adams and a bit of racing.
  • Drive to Gainsville late Saturday evening / Sunday morning early for the Gatornationals drag racing on Sunday

Then a bit of r&r before flying home Monday or Tuesday.

(must look into the Chrysler 300 or Dodge Charger)

I've just made a booking for George and me at Key West for our post-race R&R at the imaginatively named Key West Bed and Breakfast. http://www.keywestbandb.com/ The whole place is a bit pink for my liking, and the Pink Room was the only one in our price range. We won't be sharing the one and only bed!

One of the places we found had an outdoor jacuzzi which seats 24. Sounded very attractive until I read that it is a Male Only place, and clothing is optional.

(btw Key West is George's idea!!)

We are expecting to be back in Daytona for Bank and Blues http://www.bikeweektours.com/daytonabeach/in_bank.html on Wed night (or was it Thursday?) and a peek into the Shark Lounge (I think they are looking for the shark in this pic http://www.sharklounge.com/sharks/albums/table-s-c/10.jpg) before returining on Saturday.

...hey hold on here, the house was white in the first foto that I saw :D. I was a bit suspect  ??? when I saw the room was called the Pink Room.  ::) ..and I also wondered why there is a minimum of 18 years of age for all guests :-\ ...but that doesn`t mean it`s for gays :police:....does it  :'( ?

And for your info Fran the shorts that I bought at the Super-U were not pink, they were just a rather larger pair of ladies that were "misplaced" in the mens section.

Smokie, (or perhaps I should address you with a jaunty "Hello Sailor") I think you might have made a terrible error of judgement. I checked with the gay bloke who lives next door to my local pub (and no, he's not the only one in the village) and apparently "Bed and Breakfast" has a supplemental meaning in the Gay World. Ok granted, you'll get a bed for the night, but I'd be a bit more worried about who's in it with you. And as for the breakfast, you'll probably not be too hungry when you see what's on offer. Oh, he also added not to go near the whirlpool.

...if me and my shorts are not welcome then that would mean that you would be staying there by yourself and as Andy Zarse states, " you'll get a bed for the night, but I'd be a bit more worried about who's in it with you"....good luck!

Buenas Dias everyone. The gorilla has sucessfully emerged from the jungle after a short hiatus ;D All of this talk about Sebring has the silver on my back starting to tingle ;) As things draw closer, I would like to offer up a short stay at a secluded hunting lodge located on 60K acres of beautiful prime central Florida real estate for those travelling in early. I believe I can make reasonably comfortable accomodations for 10 to 12, along with the four wheeling amenities that make things interesting (Randy can weigh in with the Dragon Slayer as necessary).

Good to see all of you againg, and especially good to see that Floris and Julien could only get the four wheelers up to 42mph!

BTW, I think Julian and Floris are unknown here, they're two Dutch friends who were our guests at DfH during Le Mans 06 and went to Petit Le Mans with the Turn 10 guys. ;)

A hunting trip sounds like fun, as long as I don't have to kill animals or shoot myself in the face. ;D

Hmm - interesting link Smokie... I wonder if this is a case of the vehicle reflecting the driver's personality?

"Quiet. Sophisticated. Refined. But make no mistake, when pushed, it will respond"

They can photograph it at an angle all they want - still just looks like a gert fat lardy arsed lump to me  ::) - plenty of room for "picking up" passengers tho.

You're not going to see goats, but one of the strange things about Key West is the number of stray cats and chickens you see on the streets down there.  That and the shirt lifters.

It's baffled me for these last few weeks why two straight guys would want to spend time in what must be one of the gay capitals of the world. OK, I'm sure it's culturally rewarding to see how an in-yer-face sub-genre lives it's daily life. But other than the long bridges and unless your really into trying out the "experimental" side of your persona, it's difficult to see what the attraction of the Florida Keys is.

OMG you could be right!!!  :o :o :o

I just read a Key West review here which is suggesting it is getting straighter - http://travel2.nytimes.com/2005/11/18/travel/escapes/18key.html?ex=1161230400&en=d97ce7aa130a63cd&ei=5070. There seems to be a lot of drag act entertainment too

The Green Parrot sounds OK though - www.greenparrot.com.

This phrase from another site worries me too though... "From the nightly sunset festival in cobblestoned Mallory Square to the numerous gay and lesbian bars, Old Town is the place to discover Key West's famed let-it-all-hang-out attitude. It's also where you'll find the most memorable accommodation in restored homes - all of them gay friendly, if not gay-run." Guess where our accomodation is...  :-\ :-\

Still, we have booked just three nights there. The whole place looks cutesy, in an American kinda way, and I'm sure we can keep our buttocks clenched that long. The plan is then to go to the rather more manly Daytona in time for Bank 'n' Blues on Wednesday night, then into the Shark Lounge at midnight Wed where us Real Men will stay, drinking hard and satisfying the women there, until we leave on Saturday...

If anyone needs a tent for Sebring or even to take back home, Hell*Mart has one that's impossibly cheap right now.  Squarely in the "disposable" price range, if that blows your skirt up.  Obviously not the highest quality and probably leaks like a sieve, but you gets what you pays for.  ;)

Should anyone be interested, you could order and have it shipped to my house.  The only issue with that is that I won't be arriving at Sebring until Thursday afternoon.  I could carry up to 4 until I hit the weight limit for checked bags.  I suppose I could also have people PayPal me the money and I'd go pick them up at my local store, where they're priced at $27 + tax, or about $28.50.  (16 pounds or so.)

Quick specs:

8'x9'
3-4 person
Drink holder  ;D

OUr rental is booked from Saturdayevening on, haven't booked a hotel, think we'll take the 1,5 hour drive to Randy's that evening, also depends on whether that's possible or not with him.

as Pieter already stated, some of us will also join, but will book different flights, or maybe the same flight but have to book later due to several reasons. We will end up with a nice bunch of people over there. ;D

Title: Transgender trauma
Post by: Ferrari Spider on October 28, 2006, 06:15:41 pm
Just thinking about our chums visit to Key West, be safe, be cautious

While some tourists jet in from around the globe specifically to enjoy the androgynous charms of Patong’s legion of ladyboy prostitutes, there are still cases cases where off-guard male tourists end up with a ladyboy under the misunderstanding that he is a real woman.

Such misunderstandings can – and often do – result in disaster, as two recent reports in the local press have shown.

Green season: The first case happened on September 9, at about 3:30 am, when Pol Col Prasit Yodthong received a report from staff at the Thara Patong Hotel that outside the hotel a group of enraged ladyboys were beating senseless two Saudi tourists.

Col Prasit and eight motorcycle patrol policemen were soon at the scene, pulling the furious ladyboys off the Saudi men and taking them into custody.

Off to Kathu Police Station went the ladyboys, while their victims, with gashes on their heads and wrists from being slashed with knives, were rushed to Patong Hospital, conveniently located right across the street from the scene of the fight.

From their investigation, police learned that the group of five ladyboys had been prowling for customers in front of Tiger Entertainment Complex, on Soi Bangla, when they happened upon two drunken young Saudis, both named Mohamad, aged 24 and 25.

As is the common practice along the walking street around bar-closing time, the boys-turned-girls used a series of somewhat-less-than-coy gestures to attract the attention of the two Arab travelers.

The heaving breasts having led them into thinking their accosters were actually attractive young females, the Saudis negotiated a price of 2,000 baht each for the two ladyboys, named Nong Suzee and Nong Som-O, from Nong Khai and Chiang Rai Provinces, respectively.

Taking the ladyboys back to their room at the Thara Patong Hotel, however, they soon learned the truth: down below they were still wholly male.

Thinking they had been tricked, the two men refused to pay and contacted the hotel staff for help to get rid of Suzee and Som-O.

But as they were doing so, the two “girls” called their friends by mobile phone for back-up and a melée ensued outside the hotel.

Police arrested the five ladyboys to charge them with assault, but the two Saudis decided not to press charges, flying back to the relative sanity and tranquility of their home country the following day.

Faux pas: In the second case, at about 5 am on September 12, a 23-year-old Frenchman named Simon freaked out in the rented room of 24-year-old Nong Ple, a ladyboy who had not yet undergone the final step in gender-reassignment surgery.

When he learned that the bargirl he had gone home with was really a barboy, Monsieur Simon frantically tried to grab his clothes and bid the ladyboy adieu.

But the crafty Nong Ple locked the door to his room, blocking the Frenchman’s most logical route of escape. In his desperate bid for freedom, Simon went to the third-floor balcony – and jumped.

He was last reported to be in a grave condition at Patong Hospital, where he was being treated for a head wound requiring 50 stitches and a fractured vertebra.

just to add to the gay theme, from an event a while ago in Bali  :P

Sitting across from us near the entrance was a very attractive young lady, dressed in a tight fitting dress. She sat alone for maybe 45 minutes. Wildman looked over and said “That’s a bloke, that is.” I had to take another look, and ended up agreeing with him. Amazing what a good job these guys do with their outfits!

With some luck Robspot will be enjoying similar next year ;D

I've just had a punt around the interweb at flight prices.

Any road up, BA is currently £297 London Gatwick to Orlando in March.

BUT - I've booked Virgin Gatwick / Orlando, out on Wednesday 14th, home on Monday 19th (after Sebring and the drag racing on Sunday).
All for £287, cheaper than 2006 (which was cheaper than 2005).

Woo hoo - Sebring here we come.

A useful link.  The Thursday flight via that site is currently £288 - on Virgin.

(btw - I booked direct with Virgin on their site http://www.virgin-atlantic.com/en/gb/index.jsp - looks like I've saved a quid)

Hi Ferrari,

Phil, as much as I would like to, the simple answer is no.  My immune system isn't ready for air travel, all my travel injections have been wiped out from the treatment. It's just too scary even to think about.  We went away for a weeks break in the UK!!  Lasted two days, I went down with something like a cold and it took me four weeks to shake it off.

Possibly next year, need to visit relatives in any case, so will do it then.  Peter

Make sure you see the Saturn V lying on it's side in the large building to the north of the launch pads, acessible on the bus tour.  It is f**cking huuuuuge.

I've mentioned this before, last time I was there you could still go out to the old abandoned Apollo launch pads.  VERY haunting experience, they're just sitting out there quietly amidst the overgrown dune grass.  The towers are long gone but the concrete pads and blast channels are all still there, with a small plaque at the pad Apollo 11 set off from.

On this subject, although not directly connected, if you have a Nationwide Flexaccount, you can use your debit card abroad and you do get bank rate - even out of cash machines - and no fee unless one is charged by the atm itself.  Great if you travel a lot.

For any Brits planning on Sebring in March...

There is a week's fly/drive in the BA sale for £295. Here's the link http://www.britishairways.com/travel/bahjan07woffers/public/en_gb?source=woffers_jan07_holidayshome
but you have to call them to book - I assume that's all inclusive, so seems a good price.

Too bad I've already booked...

Beware that BA are changing the regulations on baggage. From 1st of February you will only be allowed ONE item of check in luggage (down from 2) and it cannot weigh more the 23Kg (Previously 32Kg). If you were planning on bring stuff back beware.

Also it could be foggy in March!

Title: Re: Seb*ing 2007
Post by: smokie on December 30, 2006, 09:38:22 am
Thanks Rick, I didn't know that. A couple of minor corrctions:

It's from 13 Feb and

"World Traveller customers travelling / connecting to or from the US, Canada, Caribbean, Nigeria, Brazil and Mexico will continue to be allowed two checked bags in line with the local government regulations." (This is the lowest form of ticket on BA)

Not sure if that last statement means 23kg each.

The new policy is here - http://www.britishairways.com/travel/ba6.jsp/bgpolicy/public/en_gb

The excess baggage costs are scary! "£120 per bag or £96 per bag  if paid online" for long haul...

Just checked Virgin (http://www.virgin-atlantic.com/en/gb/passengerinformation/baggage/allowances.jsp), seems they are already on 23kg (with two bags to the US etc) so BA is just coming into line

...not quite so Martin, 4 dr. full size with cancellation fee, all other fees and taxes is GBP 157.00 from floridacarhire, our comparable deal is costing us only USD 168.02. If anyone is in need of the Promotion Code and Rate Code numbers then PM me and I will pass them on. Be aware that these codes are only on certain type cars, the Dodge Charger being one of them. The pick up location in Miami is also an off airport site that makes the price also cheaper.

On somebody else's advice (can't remember whom and way-back on this thread) I have booked the smallest car available as I was told these were rarely available and the likelihood will be that I'd actually end up with something bigger for a lower rate.  No doubt all who come will bear witness to whether this works or not!

As smokey said, 2 bags is correct for flights to and from US, but the restriction is 23 kg/bag. Used to be 32 kg/bag flying from the mainland to US.

Hi Termie,
A good ploy. I rate your chance about 70% you will get a bigger car. even the economy cars are no smaller than European so you will be fine. Automatic ofcourse so will require a severe flogging to keep up with traffic :police:

$2.32 a gallon this week (though it's up and down like a whores drawers).
Regarding speeding here - I think you'll find traffic moves a little faster here than it does in UK and France - no Gatso's you see. Usually, 80mph on the Interstate will leave you unmolested by the highway patrol - but in town you have to be more prudent and if you habitually speed, you will definitely bet busted. A radar detector is standard equipment for all but the coffin-dodgers in FL.
For any of you unfamiliar with the Sebring routine, DUI is the BIG no-no. The 12 Hours is a recognised spring-break venue these days, bringing a big influx of college kids, ready to party like crazy - as a consequence there is a heavy police presence throughout race week in the area - who concentrate on nailing those who drive while blind - so take care.
Any rental Charger is going to be a six-pot, by the way - no R/T or SRT-8 - that would be asking for trouble......

Flying into Miami on Tuesday 13th and travelling to Sebring with Pidge and Gab on the Wednesday. Back to Miami on the sunday with Pidge, Gab and Smokie. Staying for the IRL and Grand AM at Homestead the following weekend and flying home Monday 26th.

Yes, I'm also sorted out and everything booked now.   ;D

I flying with Virgin to Orlando for Wednesday 14th.  I arrive late in the afternoon, pick up a rental Charger and then head straight for the track for Wednesday evening - then party, beer, sleep - the usual.

I'm then heading up to Gainesville for Sunday 18th for the Gatornationals (leaving Sebring at the crack of dawn Sunday morning), then back to Orlando for the Sunday night drink / eats with Matt H and DfH, then home on Monday evening.

Not so much planned this visit, no titty bars in Daytona etc - not much time off from work.

Not long now.  See you all there.

Has anybody actually got any tickets? I've e-mailed them, filled in the form and posted it, e-mailed them again - nothing.  Probably being daft but should I panic yet?  Make the ACO seem organised....

In previous years I've phoned and pre-booked tickets - you'll need x number of 4 day Supertickets and a General Car pass.
You'll get the tickets at the discount price and then you collect them at the 'Will Call' booth to the right of the main gate.
There is, however, an $8 handling charge.

You could, alternatively, buy tickets on arrival - you won't get the $10 per ticket discount, but no $8 handling charge either.

This year, I'm just going to buy at the gate.

So are we, no problem at all with buying at the gate last year.

As Steve has already said. I don't think they post out overseas ticket orders. They will leave it under your name and address at the will call window at the end of the ticket office block. You will need however the credit card that they were paid for with and a form of ID like your passport to collect from the will call window.

Only reason to book is the cost saving for 2 or more tickets. No panic for the areas we camp in. Reserved camping is for Motorhomes being trackside by numbered spot.

Please can I crash the thread please?

As you know KK and I can't make Sebring.....can I ask a pretty please whether there is going to be a CA/DfH S*bring T-shirt if so could we buy a couple even though we're not coming out?!   ;D

You may now resume your mutterings about S*bring  ;D
In the English section of the DfH board there is a thread about designs 2007, you might wanna check it out. ;) I saw Keith's registration yesterday, good to see that it finally did work out. ;)

Thanks for that.  My problem is that I have no idea whether or not our tickets will be waiting!  When do they take the money from your credit card - does the fact that they haven't mean they haven't got my order?  Guess I'll have to phone them...  As long as tickets are always available on the gate then it doesn't really matter.  I just wish they'd answer me.  Humph.

It's been my experience that you need to speak with them in order to get answers/help.  Once you do, they're helpful, but written communication doesn't seem to get to the right people.

In other news, I finally booked my flights yesterday, for 20% more than they were the day before.  ::)

Hi Guys,
I have seen these in person. Harper Bros can forget it as these are for Light Beer only ;D I question the 24 cans and ice claim as 1/2 the space is occupied by the electrics/motor.
Wheels are only suitable for Flat hard surfaces.
Charge requires 120v AC supply & 6 hours.
A toy for a bit of a laugh not a serious drinking machine.

Use your American Express card and get a minivan for $45.99/day at select Florida and California Thrifty locations. Use promotion code AX07. Advance reservation required. Blackout dates include 2/7/07- 2/18/07, 3/28/07- 4/7/07, 5/24/07- 5/26/07. Valid through 5/31/07.

This is valid in Orlando and is a great deal if you need a minivan.  I cancelled an existing reservation to book this one.  The only drawback is that the Thrifty car pickup requires a shuttle ride from the terminal.

Interesting twist for me, my regular schedule is going to be Tues-Sat, HOWEVER! During my training I'm working Mon-Fri.
If the week before Sebring is a Mon-Fri schedule for me, as soon as I'm off work Friday afternoon, I'm loading the car and heading for Florida. I won't know until the Friday before Sebring week, but I've got fingers crossed, I haven't missed a Twelve Hours in almost a decade and I don't want to miss this one.

Bob,
Pidge will have some tents and chairs for us (we've bought them in previous years and left them with him).
He also brings a large marquee and cooking equipment.

Bring along a sleeping mat and bag (unless you want to buy cheap ones there), couple of changes of clothes, falling over trousers, the usual.

It has been known to rain (last time was Weds / Thurs of 2005 race week).  It's hot and sunny during the day, but cools off at night (it is March, afterall).

You need to buy a 4 day superticket at the gate and a parking pass for the car.

My travel route software tells me it's a 185 mile drive door to door at 3.5 hours.  I'm going to have some sleep after the race, then get up early Sunday morning and head north.

I've pre-booked a grandstand ticket, although I'm sure there would be tickets on the gate.

Team Pidge looked after us very well when I went last time in 2005 and is located on the quieter part of the campsite areas. Pidge and Gab knock up a supurb breakfast BTW.

The Turn 10 guys are hosting DfH over in Green Park at "Turn10" This is considered as a no one sleeps area!  ;D Myself and Mark JPC will be staying over they as we are accompaning DfH for the early part of the week too.

As for camping gear I am sure that people will be able to assist you. Camping gear is easy to get in the states and is sold in most wal-marts.

Just decide where you want to stay and it will all sort itself out.

We are acquiring extra camping gear as we speak.

Many people have volunteered extra gear, but we are not sure of the total.
Some people are buying tents, some may bring their own???

Can we figure out a total # needed, and any other basics that will be helpful..

They can  easily be provided by locals and fans.

Cheers

MiCarr,

Can I put my hand up for a tent of some description? That would help.
I will bring sleeping bag and matress, no problem.

I imagine that anything else I need (food, beers etc) can be sourced on site?

Thanks for the help.

I think Doris was planning on staying with DFH, JPC, Rick and Turn 10.

@ Micarr, probably best if you can aquirre some tents, but do not worry if you do not have enough, I will bring my sleeping bag and if need be buy a cheap tent at Wal Mart. I saw one that sleeps 12 for only 99 dollars. It'll all work out fine somehow.

Yes, Turn 10 for me this year.  I have requested tent and bag via the DfH forum so believe all I need to turn up with is some Vodka (MiCarr you'd better remember those lemons  ;)), my Turn 10 hat, SpongeBob Squarepants beads and a smile.  Oh, and maybe some clothes so I don't scare the natives.   ;D

Don't forget the Hawaiin Tropic bikini contest as well!!! Here's a link to someone's online gallery. I think this is the 2005 winner! http://public.fotki.com/YetiMan/hawaiian_tropic/ht_bikini_05_194.html

Rick, JPC and DfH - your Orlando hotel bookings are secured. I've pm'd Rick Cutler with the booking references etc., and look forward to welcoming you in a few weeks. If anyone else needs a hand with close-to-airport hotels for the season-opener let me know, I'm always happy to help out if I can.
If you lads want to consider light entertainment, there's a lot of choice in close proximity to the hotel - dark, smokie dives, high end tit-bars, laid back FLA - or overtly tourist, as well as the usual corporate eating/drinking (AleHouse, Hooters, Fridays, Wing House etc. etc.) Pack your drinking boots now.
There's a Super Wal*Mart close by for your camping/cooling supplies.
See you all soon!

The Mazda is all new.  Lola chassis and a Mazda-badged AER 4-cyl turbo.

They had to do something as the Courage/rotary was occasionally slower than the Corvettes and Astons and light years behind the LMP2 Porsches.

And yes, the thing was horrifically loud.  I'm actually glad it's gone.

TEAM NEWS: Intersport Racing Returns to LMP1 Division of American Le Mans Series (14.02.2007)

DETROIT - Ending nearly a month of speculation, Clint Field, principal of Intersport Racing and 2005 American Le Mans Series LMP2 Class Champion, announced today the team will return to the LMP1 class of the American Le Mans Series for 2007. Intersport won the LMP2 class championship in 2003 and 2005. The team also won the LMP2 class at the 2004 24 Hours of Le Mans.

The team will run a Judd powered Creation CA06/H. The car is a mid-engine, rear wheel drive utilizing a carbon fiber and aluminum honeycomb monocoque chassis. The Judd GV5 is a 5 liter normally aspirated V10 and generates approximately 600+bhp at 9000 RPM.

"We've thought long and hard about the team direction and have said for the past few years that we'd like to be in LMP1," noted Clint. "Granted, the numbers in LMP1 are down right now, but long term we felt the class will see renewed growth. This is as good a time as any for us to develop our program. We know we can make the car fast... that's never been a problem for us. The focus is going to be on making sure were durable and reliable. I think our guys are very much up to the challenge."

"We chose the Creation after a lot of soul searching and study of last year's performance and lap times," Fields added. "All-in-all, the car was very fast under most conditions. I think what really tipped the scales in favor of the Creation was the car has excellent mechanical grip. Looking at the schedule and the types of tracks we encounter in the American Le Mans series, we feel that will be an advantage for us."

The team will take delivery of the car in next few days and begin their preparation for the season kickoff at the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring. Clint will be joined in the car for the 2007 Twelve Hours of Sebring by Jon Field and Richard Berry.

 :)

Can someone give me a definitive head-count on pre (10/11 March) and post (18 March) Orlando hotel room requirements.
Time's pressing on and I'm just a wee bit unsure (still) about what is required.
Ordinarily I wouldn't give a rats ass, but the bookings I've made have my name and credit card all over them, so, it's time to CONFIRM what's going on.

I'm happy to help - but I need some final numbers here......
Matt, the rooms you booked for DfH, JPC, and Rick will definitely be taken.

Like Langtall said, 10/11 DFH and JPC/Rick are confirmed. 6 rooms in total I believe for those nights and for march 18 just 7 DFH, Mark and Rick fly out on the sunday, DFH on monday. Don't know how many rooms were booked for the 18 th, 3 or 4 I presume?

We booked on 2 persons a room with dual beds per room, without taking Team Impala in count. As it are double beds anyway, will fit in somehow saturday night. ;)

OK - and thanks Knetter/LangTall
On the nights of March 10th and 11th, you need 6 twin rooms (that's 12 beds) and that includes JPC and Rick Cutler sharing one of the rooms - so that's going to leave 10 beds for the Dutch contingent - is that correct?
On the night of March 18th, you need 4 twin rooms (8 beds) - as JPC and Rick will be cuddling each other on the plane. Is that correct?
The hotel is The Ramada Inn & Suites on McCoy Road, Orlando FL 32809 and can accommodate you on both weekends.
Martini - do you need a room for 18th March? Speak now or forever hold your peace.
Steve - The Best Western is on the opposite side of the road to Ramada, so you are in very close proximity.
Sounds like everyone else is taken care of - so please just give me the nod that DfH/JPC/RickC booking is correct - and I'll go and cancel the other rooms, booked in error.
Jeeezus, where's my Tylenol?
Looking forward to seeing you all soon
Matt
p.s. Hey Prewitt - you coming over to O'town for any of this? If not, I'll see you in Turn 10.
Sincerely
The Day Fag

Mogie is also there, my guess he likes a place to sleep to. I'm with knetter on the same flight with 5 others, 2 guys on a different plane, Rick/JPC makes the stunning amount of 12. lookes perfect to me sir. :)

Not going to say anything whether there will be cudling on the plain, but for the Dutch contigent it's looking A OK!

Hi Randy
So sorry about the mis-spelling of your name. So - it's PrewEtt,  like MidgEt. That about right?

Sure I can snag a room for Team Impala - which night are we talking about?

There will be plenty of time to discuss your shortcomings, Randy, my old mate. The little secret shared with Dave H and I at Road Atlanta could well be common knowledge by the time our European visitors depart. I believe the term is blackmail.......

Looking good as far as numbers go!

If the amazing randy and micarr also want a room, it would be 7 double rooms instead of 6 on just the first night (10th of march)of the first weekend!

@ LT, it will be 7 of us on the plane, plus mogie coming over, plus pieter and martijn, plus JPC and Rick. Grand total 12, # of beds 12, works like a charm!

Hindie is commentator for the race so you'll feel at home.  There are PAs (in English!) but the proximity to the track makes things a little hard to follow all the time.  There is a broadcast throughout the event - overlaps a little with a couple of other FM stations, but you can find it.  You can get a little radio locally (e.g. Wally World), or bring your own.  Everything works the same as in Europe radio-wise.

You can also hire a walkie talkie (or use your own scanner) to tune to the pit/car freqeuencies. I took a scanner (with no manual) last year and didn't have much success finding anything of interest - but I'm told the frequencies are published someplace.

I've received a few pm's regarding car rental, insurance and the like. I dunno if the following is at all helpful. It is not meant to be patronising or demeaning - just a few observations based upon my experience here.
Car Rental
Renting a car/minivan/SUV is cheap and straightforward - but the rental company will try to up-sell insurance coverage (a lot of which you don't need)
Make sure that the cost of repair of the rented vehicle and anything or anyone (other than yourself) that you damage with it, is covered.
You can reduce the amount of the insurance deductable (the amount you pay in the event of a claim), by paying extra (CDW)
Personal Injury (to yourself) should be covered by your travel insurance - you have got travel insurance, right? You are insane if you come here without insurance that will cover medical expenses in the event of you falling ill or hurting yourself. Medical costs in this country are GIGANTIC - so don't risk it!
Uninsured Driver is another add on - because, unfortunately there are a hell of a lot of uninsured drivers in this state. I buy it, but I have to contend with the risk every day - if I was visiting for a few days, I'd probably decline it.
Driving in Florida
Driving standards in this state are very poor compared to Europe. Although US roads are much wider and straighter than European ones, Americans still manage to crash into each other with monotonous regularity. Your greatest risk is being rear-ended at traffic lights by following traffic that didn't expect you to stop for a yellow, preceding a red light - or you being T-Boned by some one running a red light - because you went immediately on your green. So - if you approach a light that goes yellow - keep going - and never, ever go on green until you are sure nobody is blazing through a red.
In many cases you may turn right on red - but not always - so read the signs.
Get out of the way of emergency vehicles - even if that means stopping in travel lanes.
Do not pass school busses (in either direction) that are stopped with red flashing lights - OK on-coming if it is a divided road (i.e. with a central median)
Expect people to overtake you on the inside.
Don't expect people to use turn signals
Don't get involved in ANY name-calling, rude hand gestures etc. Very many Floridians are armed - and may use deadly force if they feel threatened.
The Law
We have a wide and disperate variety of cops here - all of them have the power to really f*ck-up your afternoon.
City Cops, Sherrifs Deputies and FL State Troopers all have constant scanning radar in their vehicles. They like nothing better than busting you for speeding - and if you can't show a FL license, you are going to pay on the spot. Fines can be very steep for leadfoots.
Troopers on I-4 and SR27 (the southerly route from Orlando to Sebring) are out in force during race week.
The cops also take a dim view of drinking and driving. If they catch you, you go to jail - no question. If you are at the circuit and need to head out for supplies - send someone sober - the cops are just waiting for piss-heads doing beer runs. Unless you like having your personal possessions and your anal virginity stolen by fellow inmates, don't risk it.
Don't under any circumstances, argue with cops, unless you'd like to experience being Tazered, first hand.
You should carry some form of photo ID with you all the time. No ID usually ends up with a trip to the can, to establish just who the hell you are.
Heed the above - and you'll be fine!
Matt

Sounds like living in Vermont!!! Police is the same. How about people not driving but drinking in the car, in Vermont the driver could get imprisoned for that as well.

Other than that it sounds very familiar to me.

I am not sure exactly how it reads, but there is an open container law.

All of this is why I do not leave the track.

If you do have to go.Go in the morning before you start drinking. :o

Title: Re: Seb*ing 2007
Post by: Matt Harper on February 25, 2007, 06:51:57 pm
You are absolutely right Randy - I forgot about the open container bit. It is illegal to have any open container of alcohol inside any vehicle on a public road or public parking lot - and that's not just the driver - so, if a passenger is seen swigging, the driver gets busted.
In literal terms, it is actually illegal to be intoxicated in this state. Needless to say, a degree of latitude is applied at events like Sebring, Bike Week etc.
My feeling on all of this, is not to make myself an obvious target. There are plenty of people at this event who behave so insanely (and therefore attract the attentions of the law enforcement community) that you can kind of slip under the radar. I'm not advocating illegal behaviour, of course, just a modicum of common sense.
Far be it for me to preach about how folks conduct themselves - I only posted on this theme, because, for those not familiar with the way things are done here, it can be a little confusing.
One final thought just occurred to me - and I suppose only applies to the lads reading this (but you never know) - you can't piss in public here, as seems sort of OK at Le Mans. So, whapping out your pride and joy and slashing against the nearest tree/fence/RV/corner marshall will reward you with a trip in the back of a squad car and a dent in your wallet, in addition to the ridicule of all your mates ("Looks like a penis, only smaller" etc. etc.)

What you will be smelling along with the burnt Brat's,racing fuels etc. is the sweet smell of the Florida orange blossom.I look forward every year to that drive through all of the orange groves on the way to the track.
It is quite refreshing. ::)

They drink it in spain, and its called (not spelled right) Karokeo - or something like that.

France is 6 hours ahead of EST. The race starts at 10.00am EST - so I figure you need to set your Tivo/DVD/Whatever to 'commencer' at 4.00pm Garlic Time - and don't let it 'finis' until, er,  12 hours later - sorry, that's "Mobil 12 Hours" later.

Yep. They made a nice cheap deal, but they took out all monies up ahead without warning. Apparently it was within their terms somewhere on their site, but they could have had the decency to tell me up ahead. Would have saved me an arguement at home, and would have taken Knetter to JPC's birthday party.

To all flying to Florida this weekend or early next week - Have a safe trip, which is on time, with out any hassle.

Whoa, there! If this could even passingly be construed as "dairy product" you are not permitted to bring it into the USA.
Maybe it isn't - but if it says "milk" on the packaging, you are asking for tug.
As a rule of thumb, if it's edible, or gets you stoned, don't bring it. This applies particularly to meat, fruit and dairy - and any form of recreational substance. Orlando International has a little army of sniffer dogs, who roam the arrivals halls (we're close to P Rico, you understand). Not wishing to piss on Phil's bonfire, but I wouldn't chance it. If in doubt check with USCIS - not the airline - they couldn't care less!

Looks like Sebring's not in the cards for me.  I start a Tues-Sat shift next week, and it would probably get things off to a rocky start to ask for Saturday off and head to Florida. Oh well, it'll be there next year.  On the plus side however, I already definitely have the Petit weekend off.  See you in Georgia in October.
Have fun everyone next weekend, don't do anything I wouldn't...which isn't much ;)

The 'advance party' have arrived. JPC and Rick Cutler wobbled off a Virgin Atlantic 747 yesterday afternoon, having knocked a serious dent in their liquid hospitality. I collected them from the airport and as ordered, took them directly to my local bar. We 'relaxed' there until a phone call from a Dutchman advised us that there was a large group of thirsty, orange-clad gentlemen (and one lady) waiting at the hotel.
After a bit of a kerfuffle over the rooms, we went directly back to the pub, where we stayed until..... well, I'm not really sure how long we stayed, or how I got home - or what happened to my guests and new/old friends.
I have some blurry memories of last night.

I recall that all of the Netherlanders speak better English than I do. They are all polite, gracious, generous, humorous, considerate and an absolute joy to be in the company of. They all drink like bastards, which gave me great comfort.

Mark Every likes to sing in public.

Mark Every said he'd brought me some tea bags - but failed to hand them over.

Rick Cutler appeared to have scored with two (yes, two) hotties, who were staying at the same hotel and ended-up out on the piss with us.

I think I persuaded the group to go to Daytona Beach today to catch the tail-end of Bike Week, rather than wander amongst the inanimate phalluses at Kennedy Space Center. Time will tell if they heeded my advice. I am deeply worried that they will be back here again tonight - for a repeat performance.

My liver aches.

Hey Wishy
I sent you a PM.
Yes - I would be happy to join you for a couple of beers upon arrival tomorrow.
If you have a phone that works here (tri-band) call me when you get through immigration.
I'm guessing you've got a renter organized - which company?
Matt

I'm on the 11:15 Virgin from Gatwick South on Thursday  8) 8)

Doris is collecting me at 06:30, should be at the airport by 8ish all being well. I've completed the pre-check-in info, and have my seat reserved (up the back). I packed at the weekend but need to unpack and repack...case was 22.9kg which gives no scope for buying anything so I am trying to find a smaller case and pack into 2 cases.

I reckon there will be time for beer...  :)

Just completed the online check in. There are nearly 60 empty seats in cattle class - VS027 tomorrow - for any late comers.

I appear to have myself two seats together, up the back.

Not long now!!!  ;D ;D ;D

Doris is on BA. I am on the 12:45 Virgin VS015. Arrives at MCO 50 minutes later. Just time for Doris to pick up the car. I will try to change to your flight,(65 spare seats on my flight) can't see that it will be a problem but maybe now I have checked in they won't change it
