Hmmmm, It would save us £600 each year for the van hire. I'll keep an eye on it. ;DExactly - its a bargain
I can not believe that this classic piece of Le Mans furniture is : A being sold : B on Flee Bay : this vehicle only has one home next to the circuit on MB and should be placed there , I have camped near this vehicle for a number of years and have stopped chatted to the guys and read the van. This vehicle should not be allowed to leave the Le Mans crowd. What a shame :( :( :( :(
Great news Rex and Russ.
I'm glad to see the old girl's Le Mans history will live on and she didn't end up as a hen night party bus.
As she will be living with me then a weekly sunday outing will be in order plus other missions that are to be disclosed at a later date. She wont sit on her own, unloved etc. We have plans for her!! ;D ;D ;DGreat news Rex and Russ.

Just what do you think it'll be used for the other 51 weeks of the year?

The Brethren et al,I persuaded Jim to let us have the little flag pole but there was no mention of the flags. We will ask when planning our collection of the Popemobile. He was very quick to say that the giant flag pole is his... and his only
Did the purchase of the Popemobile include the Flag pole? And more importantly did it include the Canadian Maple Leaf and Stars & Stripes (Flags) which have flown high and proud on MB since 2001? Support for Leftie on the continued presence of teh Dragon too. The attendace board should also be retained to preserve the history. wether Rusty should be required to wear the pope hat i leave for others to decide 8)
Canada Phil donated the Maple Leaf
Pidge donated the Stars & Stripes
for those coming to Sebring I can introduce you to Pidgeon.

I do hope this spurs Mr Z into similar action - the combination of this and the Commer together at Le Mans should be beyond compare...
MG Mark
I don't know about others but if you fancied having a restoration fund I'd put a few quid in. It truly is a piece of history and I imagine the restoration is going to eat some pennies...
She is running a 6 pot 3.0 petrol with what appears to be a Zenith Carb. She runs beautifully and is so clean in the engine bay its unreal. I have never seen one that tidy!!
which engine does she (the Popemobile of course, Polish princess power plants are less readily assessed, I may need to do some research there!) have, is it the diesel or the wonderful all singing Bedford petrol engine (where the hell did I put that spare dizzy??)
Lord PP
I havnt heard TrayBoys name mentioned for many a year.If hes still about,I feel he would be ideal to take over from the Pope.

Andy,
I am, of course, torn between these two, both sturdy and steadfast icons of UK industry and achievement, as they are in their own endearing ways. The Bedford would provide an outstanding opportunity to indulge in some gratuitous firing of Verey and Schermuley flares from the old mobile control tower into the surrounding plebiscite of BN in the best "damn the torpedoes and repel boarders" traditions. Quite fitting, given the likely additions to the Bedford of The Brethren's usual battle adornments of the Merchant Navy and RAF Ensigns and the White Star pennant, accompanied by stirring accoutrements of film and musical accompaniment. Such a platform would not, of course, befit the Commer's superior social status, which would emulate that of a suitably refined detachment status, mobile Officers Mess to retreat to afterwards.
And, yes, I had considered the socio-economic groupings, concluding that the Commer would, indeed, be the most appropriate flagship to represent the B and C1 professional grades (or whatever they are called these days) rather than other grades of a more "manual" nature. I had made allowance for this in my comment on the now (apparently) erroneous assumption that the mighty Commer (and her custodian) would rise above the situation, and neatly complement the comparatively rudimentary nature of the Bedford and provide a suitable cross-sectional representation of such vehicles, with a "bugger that, I'm not letting the side down" clarion call.
But seemingly not, and the base, easy attractions of - of all things - a Mercedes Sprinter appear to be too tempting. A shame, as the legend already appears to have descended to gutter press sniping level before any engagement on the field of conflict, and the battle honour of "BN 2009" assigned to one of them, other than by default of non-appearance, would have a certain cachet and ring to it.......
MG Mark

Well done on a fine purchase of a piece of Le Mans history LPP and Co. My only experience of the popemobile is a quick wander round it on my 1st visit to LM 3 years ago so im looking forward to seeing her in full glory on a sunny BN this year.I'm not too sure that she will be making the trip this June due to the work that needs doing to bring her up to our required standards. We shall see!!

it's a very fine place to throw up in - marvelous! As mentioned previously, I can see you sat on the roof terrace in your underpants, pope hat on... surveying your Vatican... well actually leering at any women or boys that walk past!!
Trayboy for Pope!
Rex, having initially started this thread and brought to your attention the fact that it was originally for sale, I feel a little bit responsible now.I think that is a fitting punishment for your actions. Hopefully you will be having a cold Leffe on the roof terrace soon.
Maybe I should have a cold Leffe as a penance!

Rex, I've just been chatting to a mate of mine who's very familiar with Bedford TKs. He reckons the diesel engined version should give you 30 mpg and shouldn't be much of a job to carry out an engine swop (although the cab will need to be lifted off). Its a thought I had been looking into. One to run by the crew and see what they think. We have the facilities down here to do it easily and there is so much room that it may even be achievable without cab removal, using a bit of forest magic!
Bedford TK diesel engines are available via Army surplus.
Getting tempted.....
A turbo Popemobile, whatever next. Wouldn't a gas turbine be more appropriate? It is hatefully slow until it gets moving... when I overtook they cyclist I was doing about 20mph but once you get to 30+ she kicks her heels and starts to gallop. A carb change is planned as the Zenith? is tiny and a decent Weber twin, like Nick has offered would help. The Diesel options offer a similar performance in lower gears but with higher top end and economy. The popempbile is the luxury 4 speed so a box change would be needed too... I say leave her as she is for the time being and then make plans.
Would a diesel increase the cruising speed? as a recall that it was a bit slow

Thats the one... and its him that is responsible for my LM addiction. What sort of father takes a 15 year old beer enthusiast and a mate to Le Mans with one of his heavy drinking friends. A bloody good one!! ;D.......my old man .....Accordong to Debretts, that must be Duke Pen of Bashley.

Do some web surfing and found this, says it was taken at Brocklands. Not sure if is based there on just there on a day trip.
Anybody in Brocklands area might want to have a look.

Bloodyhellinawetdream can you imagine the Melans and Lady PP in a Panther on Bleu Nord with a couple of Gimpies?
That should put the sh!tes up the pikies, certainly does me!
Spoke to a guy today who has a white Rolls Royce which he uses for wedding, say's he is often asked for a pink Roller.
And worse, he is thinking of getting one in the future.
I wish I had my camera with me, it was late Saturday night at Sebring....I saw the Pope, he was looking for the protection of his Popemobile. My husband was the only one around who knew what I was talking about when I got excited to see him. Hope he shows up at LeMans.....Trust me... there will be a pope at Le Mans this year... and one driving back from Wales in 2 weeks time... very slowly! ;D

ommmmmmmMuch like Lady PP, it has a lovely gearbox ;) and changing cogs was ever so easy with a good click click up and down change. The speed issue comes from its huge fat body and aerodynamic disability. Simon says it will hit 60mph but you have no steering as the plate glass and steel viewing area makes it so ass heavy. Perhaps wheelie bars would be an option... my drive back will tell all. Sure I will have an essay to type after that... and I hope lots of you will be there for the arrival.
ommmmmmm
ommmmmmm
a prediction has just slapped me like a wet tangoing
I predict that as you get used to driving the Bedford and its quirky box it will actually drive faster than you are expecting
The "reach behind your left buttock and swing the stick into place" motion soon becomes somewhat easier and the engine will enjoy doing a bit, a bit more.
I agree with Perdu, the gear change takes a bit of time to get used to.Last time I spoke to Simon we agreed for it to MOT'd (its a PHGV?) so has the same test as a car, so will have a years ticket when we get it. I should be an MOT Tester (sideline and bowstring) by the time its next due so all looking good. Woo
LPP, have you sorted out the DVLA 'Operators Lisense' etc? Even privatly owned it must be plated etc.

Pope Pig Pen does have a certain ring to it ::)
It is happening this Saturday. She is all MOT'd up and sailed through with just a tyre and the usual emmissions issues. Insurance will be sorted tomorrow so the docs are here in time to tax her when we get to Wales Friday afternoon. Then its a night on the town and heading back late morning on Saturday.
The wait is nearly over!!
I insured her today too... and at a very reasonable price on a 3000 mile limit. Fully comp including international recovery/breakdown, track day cover ??? and show cover. Under £103 all in... Now thats a bargain!

:o wow thats great, more money for petrol!
The trackday cover bit made me spill my coffee ;DWith Drum's all round it will be on my mind all day... they were sharp on the test drive but after driving that far..... ;D
I wish I could be there to welcome her. Enjoy the drive home and remember to brake early.
LPP,After Saturday I will be able to have a full run down with Vern... Fingers crossed ;D
You need to speak to Vern' he drove some in the RAF and latter MoD iirc.
Haven't had a chance to get to Brooklands yet due to other problems, but I will promise to do the 'investigation'.
Hi LPP,We have a route planned which is all motorway and A roads without too many roundabouts and sharp corners so should be quite a pleasant drive (he says optimistically)
Take it easy.remember she is tall so avoid low overhangs also top heavy so avoid sudden changes of direction. Leave plenty of room for the idiot drivers on the road gawking at you instead of looking where they are going :o
Phil
Well - how did the trip go ?
and the drinking after ?
hope you all go there OK
Give us an update, were all keen to know!
WELL?
She is going for a bath tomorrow! Time to remove all the years of encrusted algea and filth. May even go a bit faster without that layer of dried gunge ;D
More popemobile's - this one was at an airfield near Luton. Was that RAF Marham by any chance?... JP Chenet spotted a yellow one there a while back.
Are you going to have a sock flying above the Popemibile? ;) ;) ;D

It was a friends 40th so she slept 4 in comort and had teenage girls dancing on the roof. Got her home today and had a blast in a Noble on the way back. Good to know a mechanic that get lots of exotica!

I remember.... Its such a shame that the "real" funfair has gone. Finding strippers as a 15 year old nipper was a fantastic experience ;D
The LM Wall of Death was excellent Barry.
Motorcycles going around is chicken feed. He fired up a VW Beetle buggy and drove that around!! :o

Now I know why the whole thing was shaking when I walked past!!!
Some of the rides looked rather unsafe too...
...... and real shotguns with more than one pellet in them... oh they were the days ;D
I was there on Saturday but I didn't notice one. Then again I wasn't looking.
MG Mark will know for sure.
The old fun fair was good value, but you really had to be in the right mood for it.My mate still feels queasy when I remind him what one of the strippers did to him. Lets just say he still has this recurring taste of tuna.........or was it haddock????
We only tried the go karts the once, the same ones are featured on the film Le Mans, thats how old they are and they did not look new then! Once your time was up they put a barrier across the track, caught out a few people.
The strippers, well what can you say, about a 100 guys crammed into the back of a lorry to see some dodgy tarts. you really had to be there, it was hot and sweaty is all I can remember! Its bizzare to think that we even thought one was better than the other. Thats the power of beer for you.
The fattest lady, my brother had a post card with her on it for years. I expect he still has, then there was aligator boy and a couple of others over the years.
I refused to go on the rides on H & S grounds, the rollercoster seemed to be standing on various bits of random wood to make it level, not sure if some of the feet were even touching it.

Pre Mot and wheel swapping this afternoon and MOT Friday at 3PM. Wish me luck!

in horribly perverted ways by Private Trayboy that defy description.
Just spoken to Stinky Bill and he's up for next weekend as well Rex, he's also thinking of possibly joining you and Pete for the trip down on the Monday. i need to get Trayboy and Chop on board too, so at least Trayboy can brag about the work he's done ;D , not !!!I have a feeling Pete might bail on us due to financial constraints so Stinky Bill is welcome as a co pilot for the drive down. Its a shame my gas mask got stolen when my car got done over as that would have been handy for spending several hours in a small cab with Bill ;D
Another hard weekend ahead, but she's looking good, generator cover and new steps fabricated, new panelling to the fuse box area. As Rex said, paint and graphics time next, refit the roof and rails, side and rear panel, finish interior decoration, refit roof lining and new carpets, fit TV and satellite, new fridge freezer and the list goes on.

As Rex said, paint and graphics time next, refit the roof and rails, side and rear panel, finish interior decoration, refit roof lining and new carpets, fit TV and satellite, new fridge freezer and the list goes on.

The Popemobile was then, this is now Bob.
Sgt. Major Chop is issuing instructions that anyone using the PM name will be put on a charge and dealt with in horribly perverted ways by Private Trayboy that defy description.

I believe that most people these days are of the opinion that the pope is a c**t which would lead very nicely to an appropriate new name, particularly given the nature of the fellow who'll be driving it :)

So which element of Disney did you get inspired by or was it something to do with James Bond - or both!
Or is my sight going?
Or is it a very basic paint job and tidy-up?
Why all the freakin' hype????????
>Martini...LB

i agree total credit to the lads in restoring the big green lorry to its former glory yet still adding a little twist with the pinky colour to represent the new owners.
TBH i did wonder if it was going to have blow up dolls, dildos and a bondage chamber but top marks to the guys for the out come :)

I thought I'd seen it somewhere, but went through all 33 pages of this thread 1st.
Ah well, must try harder next time, eh? :(
I have to admit that the current (real) popemobile was a bit of a disappointment. Plus if you're going to make a bulletproof car, having opening windows is a bit of a liability. Cameron turned up in the bulletproof Jag, and they took Benny the 16thd away in a BMW with foot thick windows.
Anyway, I suspect the RHD ML based popemobile is now on Ebay and could make a nice campervan. Not sure about the white paint job.

Did this ever get fixed? Where is it these days?
Big Irta resides in Kent with Mr Hardie, it was repaired and is fully functional, however it’s LM days are done due to its fragility and the cost of getting it there and back.Sad times but totally understandable.Did this ever get fixed? Where is it these days?
